Are you going to purchase a new Nikon D3x:

  • 24.5 MPixels.
  • Cropped mode shooting at 10Mpixels.
  • ISO 50-6,400.
  • Live view.
  • 5 frames per second in FX mode and 7 frames per second in DX mode.
  • Nikon advertising (can you believe this) state that the file quality will be of similar quality to medium format camera images.

This camera is due to be announced today.

Having ISO50 is good, back to the good old days of Kodachrome. Great for capturing waterfalls etc where you want to create movement. The image below was taken on Kodachrome film at low ISO to enable me to get blurring of the flowing water. With some of the current digital cameras where we have a minimum ISO of 200 this is not possible.

The D3x camera will produce extreme file sizes to process on your computer. When I used to scan 35mm images on my Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400, it used to produce file sizes of around 100MB. The Nikon D3x will produce similar size files in TIF format around 75MB I think. These are massive files for processing and storage. I really love my Nikon D2H as the file sizes are around 1/6 of the size we will be seeing from the D3x, the D2H files are so easy to process due to the small file sizes and low storage requirements.

The cropped mode (DX mode) shootiing at 10 Mpixels will be great for telephoto work.

I have no doubt that this new camera will be a superb camera for landscape and any other photography where extreme detail is required or where extreme enlargements are required.

What will the next big step for Nikon be. My guess is a revised D300 with a few more megapixels and probably a camera with the technology of a D3x  in a package similar to the 12 MPixel D700.
