There has been some discussion recently on the possibility of aliens visiting Earth. This close up image of a praying mantis does appear to have some resemblance to an alien. This image was taken with film using a Nikon 55mm Micro lens.

No the Nikon lens is not nasty, it is one of the best lenses I have. It is all the pollution pouring into the atmosphere from this mine, that is nasty, very nasty. This image was taken at Mt Isa Mines, Mt Isa, Queensland, Australia, at sunrise. I believe sunrise and sunset are generally the best time to take images to get dramatic lighting.

How to Take a Panorama Image

The panorama image below was constructed using the five images shown. There was considerable overlap in the images, to make it easier for the software to merge the images into one panorama. It is relatively easy in photoshop to merge the images using File/Automate/Photomerge, then browse to find the images, tick the blend images together box, select interactive layout, select OK, align the images, click OK again and the images should be magicaly alligned. This process is sometimes called stitching.

It is best when doing panoramas to use the manual settings on the camera if possible, manual focus, manually adjust exposure and manually select white balance.

This panorama shown, was hand held, but could be improved by rotating the camera on a tripod using a level to get a better alignment of the images.

Some sophisticated equipment is available to assist in creating panoramas, such as rotational devices with click stop adjustments and levels, nodal point adjuistment brackets etc.

Daly Waters was an important strategic location during World War 2 and there is a run down airfield nearby. The town of Daly Waters is around 620 Km south of Darwin.  There are not many tourist attractions in the town, the only one being the pub. There is even a watering trough in front of the pub for your horse.

Yesterday we saw some of Australia’s outback. Today we are commencing a Pub crawl around the Australian outback and will continue for the next few days. Why go on a pub crawl when I do not drink, just an excuse to put up some more pictures.

Todays image is the Silverton Pub, just 1,183Km west of Sydney near Broken Hill. Once a thriving mining town of 3,000 people, Silverton is now a ghost town with a pub and several other historic buildings.

Welcome to Silverton.

The following images were taken travelling between Brisbane and Darwin.

This first image is at the border of Queensland and Northern Territory. Here, there is plenty of nothing except for lots of grass as far as the eye can see.

There is an occasional tree.

And there is an occasional windmill, near the local bore, to supply essential water.
